Government Celebrates the Koh Ker’s World Heritage Status

PHNOM PENH: In an important move for Cambodia’s cultural heritage preservation, the Koh Ker Temple complex was officially inscribed as a World Heritage Site at a committee hearing in Saudi Arabia over the weekend.

Ministries and institutions in Phnom Penh and the provinces participated in a drumming ceremony this morning to celebrate the inclusion of the Koh Ker Temple complex in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Ministers arrived at their offices early in the morning to celebrate with their respective government officials.

Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, Chea Somethy, joined in the celebration by singing the Khmer national anthem as a reminder of the culture and achievements the Khmer ancestors built for the people of Cambodia.

The Koh Ker Temple complex joins Angkor Wat, Preah Vihear and the Sambor Prei Kuk temple on UNESCO’s prestigious list which provides publicity, development funding and protection during war under the Geneva Convention.

This evening, Prime Minister Hun Manet is expected to lead a celebration ceremony to commemorate the event.
